What is deep root feeding?
Deep root feeding is a process of injecting hamate’s, other organics, and nutrients directly into the root zone of your trees, to better the quality of the soil they live in. This process allows us to tailor the applications to your trees’ specific needs. If we suspect a micro-nutrient deficiency, we can target it by adding in a supplement of micro-nutrients. If it turns out that your soil is lacking in natural sources of nitrogen or other macro-nutrients (less common, but it does happen), we can bridge that gap by adding in small, controlled dosages of slow-release nitrogen. The focus is to encourage natural, healthy growth and vigor, without the negative side effects of over-fertilization that traditional fertilization applications can carry.
Why is deep root feeding important?
To put it simply, a stressed tree is a susceptible tree. Very rarely is a perfectly healthy tree attacked by insects and disease. This means that insects and disease are often a symptom of a problem, rather than the root cause. Treating symptoms is important, but addressing the root cause is critical as well. Most trees impacted by insects and disease are already suffering from pre-existing stressors. In the urban forest, these stressors can be numerous. Inadequate light availability, drought, poor soil quality, improper planting depth, soil compaction, extreme weather, and pollution are just a few of the stressors that our trees deal with. Since many of these stressors are out of our control, it is essential to affect the ones that we can. Deep root feeding, along with proper watering, is an important part of maximizing the health of our trees in an often-hostile urban environment.
