Managing Emerald Ash Borer on your Ash Tree
Emerald ash borer (EAB) is an invasive wood-boring insect that has steadily spread across the country and into our area as well. It was discovered in Boulder in 2013 and has since spread to nearby communities, down to Arvada, Westminster, and Thornton. In 2023 it was discovered in Littleton (likely spread through the transport of infected firewood). EAB is a rapidly spreading insect that can attack and kill an ash tree whether it is in perfect health or stressed, unlike our native ash borers which generally only attack stressed and declining ash trees. A properly treated ash tree (through trunk injection) is protected from EAB for 2 years. When EAB treatment is applied correctly, it is 85 to 95 percent effective. Where EAB is active, it is not a question of if an untreated ash tree will be infested, but when. In areas with confirmed activity, all ash trees should either be protected or removed to slow the spread of the insect. In areas of the front range that EAB has not yet reached, we recommend treatment proactively to ensure your ash trees are protected when it does spread further.
